The New York CIty based architectural firm of Shreve, Lamb & Harmon was founded in 1929 and best known for their design of the Empire State Building in New York City, New York. Richmond Harold Shreve (1877-1946) was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, Canada. He studied and taught at Cornell University before joining the New York based Carrère & Hastings where he would he meet William Frederick Lamb (1883-1952). Brooklyn, New York born Lamb had studied at Columbia University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts prior to their meeting. Shreve & Lamb architectural firm was formed in 1924 soon after the two left Carrère & Hastings. Shreve ran the business and promotion side of the company, and Lamb the design. In 1929, Arthur Loomis Harmon (1878-1958) joined the firm. Harmon had been educated at the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia University, and worked at the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White prior to becoming a partner. Shreve, Lamb & Harmon are well known for their work in New York City on the Empire State Building, the John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Building, and the Forbes Building.
