Iraklion Air Station Crete

This collection features most of the major structures and locations on this previously active, small, US Air Base located some 10 to 15 miles east of the city of Iraklion, Crete. This USAFSS (Security Service) base opened in the early 1950's and continued operation until its closure in 1994 when the US turned the base over to the Greek government. It now serves as city hall for the village of Gournes and home to the Creteaquarium. An assignment to this quiet and beautiful little island was a choice assignment for security service airmen. The vast majority of veterans of this facility remember it fondly to this day, attested to by the meticulous recreation of this facility here.
