British Windmills by Jonathan Green
|
Windmills in Britain were first built around the end of the 12th century. Designs and materials varied depending on where they were built, and they were of vital importance to the local economies for flour and animal feed grinding. Later, they were also developed to drive saw mills, drain marshland, and grind cement. They began to fall out of use in the early 20th century due to more effective and cheaper methods of flour production and more effective and powerful engine alternatives, compared to the high cost of maintaining a windmill. The few that are now preserved are often maintained with money raised by small charity groups and donations. The models here cannot show every detail, and I hope you get the chance to visit one on the many open days.
