Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, England by SteveGMC
|
This collection of models centres around the old area of Godmanchester or as it was known back in the days of the Roman empire 'Durovigutum'. Godmanchester is a small town and we are lucky to have a large number of listed buildings which are protected by law. These buildings are otherwise knows as 'Listed' and can't be demolished or altered as they hold historic interest to the community. Many of the models in this collection are listed, by clicking on the model description it will show if the building is Listed and if so you can select the weblink that will take you to the detailed listing at the English Heritage website. This will describe the building, gave it's grade and show more images. In 2012 Godmanchester also celebrates it's 800 year birthday, or date of Charter. In this year the community association have organised many events to celebrate including walks by Historians discussing the towns history and re-enactments on the recreation fields. This all in conjunction with out annual Gala and very popular Picnic in the Park!
The town was first chartered by King John in 1212, though it had been a market town and royal manor for some years. There is archaeological evidence of Celtic and earlier habitation prior to the establishment of a key Roman town and a Mansio (inn), so the area has probably been continuously occupied for more than 2000 years.
