From the book by Cathleen Norman, Golden Old and New - A Walking Tour Guide “This tour visits the Twelfth Street Historic Residential District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. These quiet shady streets are where Golden's early civic leaders and merchants made their homes. Business managers, dentists, doctors, and druggists also lived here, within walking distance of their stores and offices. School of Mines professors too resided in this neighborhood, and Mines students rented rooms in some of the larger houses. Residents also included workers at the west Twelfth Street industrial sites, such as the White Ash coal mine, the now-demolished Colorado School of Mines Experimental Plant, and the Parfet Rubey clay pits. The neighborhood reflects the simple tastes of Golden's early residents. Graceful, gabled homes were built in plain and unpretentious styles of the 1870s and 1880s, styles seen in other territorial towns like Idaho Springs, Georgetown, Central City, and Denver's oldest neighborhoods. Brick was predominantly used, taking advantage of the abundant local clay deposits and local brickyards. Some homes were adorned with decorative shingles, bay windows, or wrap-around porches.” (Page 10) -
