Historic Hattiesburg, Mississippi
by Jack Clark - JC3D Studio
Hattiesburg, a city of some 48,000 is the principal city of south central Mississippi and the county seat of Forrest County. Known as the Hub City, it was founded in 1884 by Capt. William Hardy who named the city for his wife, Hattie. Most downtown structures date back to the turn of the century. In recent years the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association has promoted the revitilization of Downtown while preserving its architecture. Examples of Neo-Classical Revival, Italian Renaissance, Art Deco, and Victorian styles, are evident througout the downtown district. Hattiesburg's smalltown charm along with its two universities, and cultural attributes have made it a desirable retirement community. Downtown Hattiesburg has become a cultural and entertainment mecca for the area.
