Historic St. Augustine, Florida
by Joshua Joyner
Welcome to the Historic St. Augustine Collection. St Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabbited city in the United States. Before its founding in 1565 by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it was already being explored and mapped by Spanish explorer and governor of Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce de León, who claimed the region for the Spanish crown. The City of St. Augustine has seen much conflict during its existence as a Spanish colony and under American rule. Encounters ranged from wars with Great Brittain and the French, who besieged the city numerous times, to the Indian Wars with the United States. The biggest attraction to the area is the Castillo de San Marcos. The Castillo was born of the necessity to protect the colony from the numerous attacks Spains rivals unleashed upon the settlement. The walls were never breached though numerous attempts were made. Today the city is a tourist destination with the Castillo being ever popular and the city's historic center of St. George Street where numerous period buildings are lined. Celebrate St. augustine and its near 450 year history. Thats a lot for the average city in the U.S. ;)
