天安门原为明清皇城的正门，始建于明永乐十五年（1417年）。1949年10月1日，中华人民共和国在这里举行了开国大典，它由此成为其象征，并被设计入国徽。近现代天安门广场上发生了许多重大的历史事件，也使其受到了国际性的关注。
Tiananmen Gate, or the Gate of Heavenly Peace, bounds the northern end of Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing. It was first built in 1417 during the Ming Emperor Yongle's reign as the principal entrance leading to the Forbidden City. It was from the rostrum of the gate that Mao Zedong announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. Tiananmen Square has been the site of a number of political events and student protests.
