The church was built in neo-classical style from 1851 to 1854. It was designed by Lodewijk Roelandt, the city architect of Ghent. From 1996 until 1998 the church received a thorough renovation due to subsidence, the solid bottom in Doel is 11 meters deep while the wooden planks upon which the church rests are a mere 7 meters deep.
