Cross erected at Cape Denison in Antarctica in November 1913 near Mawson's hut in memory of Belgrave Ninnis and Xavier Mertz who died during Mawson's eastern expedition in 1912/13. Ninnis died after falling down a crevasse, along with most of the group's food. Mertz died from starvation and a poor diet and Mawson only just survived. The cross was built by Hodgeman and Bickerton. The plaque reads: "Erected to commerate the supreme sacrifice made by Lieut. B.E.S. Ninnis R.F. and Dr. X Mertz in the cause of science. A.A.E. 1913" (AAE stands for Australian Antarctic Expedition). Modelled by Peter Olsen, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, Australia
