Formerly called the Kansas State House, the Kansas State Capitol building in Topeka houses the Kansas Legislature. Designed from the architectural drawings of Edward Townsend, a 35-year old from Milwaukee, the Kansas State Capitol became both a symbol of governance and democracy built in stages starting in 1866. Like most other capital states in the union the Kansas state capitol mimics the architecture from the Italian Renaissance, symbolizing 19th century public architecture.
