The Antwerp Stadsschouwburg (city theater) is one of the largest theatre complexes of the European mainland and is foresee for musicals, concerts, dancing, theatre and congresses. It has been built in 1968-1981 and in the middle of nineties it is bought by Music Hall Group NV which renovated the building in 1994. The building also offers shelter to HETPALEIS (a theater house for children, young people and artists) and the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp.
On the North side is Grand Café Horta, referring to the steel framework in the interior, originally from a Victor Horta designed brasserie in Brussels which is now demolished.
In 2006-2008 the Theaterplein in front of the Stadsschouwburg is rebuilt, in addition to which an enormous mainly transparent awning was added.
