In 1936, Australian National Airways (a branch-off of Holyman's Shipping Service) built this iconic Art Deco building in the CBD of Launceston, as their headquarters. Founded in 1932 by brothers, Victor and Ivan Holyman, ANA started with a single aircraft (a Desoutter II), offering flights between Launceston and Flinders Island. Soon the company had bought more aircraft and bought out many other aircraft companies. Holyman House was built to reflect the confidence in the Holyman Empire, and was to house both the ANA headquarters as well as the family buisness, Holyman's Shipping Service, which ANA evolved from, therefore outmoding the old Holyman Building on the Esplanade (now part of Jackson Ford). Under the Chifley Government, ANA was put under pressure as the government wanted to end ANA's aerial monopoly by establishing TAA (Trans Australian Airways), and hopefully put ANA out of business, the plan failed, but it crushed ANA's competitive edge. By the 1950s, ANA was run solely by Ivan Holyman and was the largest airline company in Australia in a duel monopoly with TAA, massively overpowering other airlines such as QANTAS, but with Ivan's sudden death in 1957, the company soon fell into chaos and was sold to a smaller rival, Anset, to avoid massive financial losses.
