The Neo-Gothic building was erected in the years 1881-1894 over several plots of land. Houses originally occupied this site, belonging in the 16th and 17th centuries to the most distinguished mayors of Toruń, coming from the Stroband family. These houses, togrther with alomst the whole west frontage of the market place, were destroyed during the Swedish siege of 1703. They were replaced in the late 18th century by a building used for weddings. It was later changed to the hotel "de Varsovie" and Napoleon Bonaparte stayed there from 2 to 6 June 1812.
