Towering more than 200 feet above Latah Creek in Spokane, Washington, the nearly one-mile long Latah Creek Railroad Bridge is the only railway gateway into Spokane from the West (lines from Seattle, and Portland merge on the bridge and head into Spokane). Designed by HNTB Architects of St. Louis, the bridge was constructed in 1972 as part of a relocation of several miles of track that ran through Downtown Spokane in order to prepare for Spokane to host Expo `74. Initially, the proposal was for the bridge to be built as a standard, generic steel trestle, but after criticisms from local architects that such a design would destroy the scenic look of the canyon it spanned (as well as destroy the look and feeling of western gateway to the city), the design was completely scrapped in favor of the appropriate and dignified looking steel plate girder bridge seen today. The single track bridge is utilized daily by Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacifc railways as well as Amtrak's Empire Builder train.
