The longest suspension bridge in Portugal spans the Tagus River in Lisbon. The bridge has a central span of just over one kilometer and two side spans, both over 600 meters long. The deck carries six road lanes and two railroad tracks 70 meters over the water surface. The towers holding the four 60 centimeter thick cables, are over 190 meters tall and are the second tallest structures in Portugal. The bridge was constructed between 1962 and 1966 by the American Bridge Company. The design is similar to the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco California. The lower deck that carreis the railroad tracks and the second set of cables were added in 1999.
