The Central Steam Plant was built in 1916 and acquired by Washington Water Power (now Avista Utilities) three years later. WWP operated the plant, which supplied central steam heat to over 350 downtown buildings, until 1986. Its twin 225 ft. smokestacks are a Spokane landmark. In 1996 the building -- designed by Kirtland Cutter -- was carefully rehabilitated by Wells & Co. and converted to an office/retail center. The 1890 Seehorn-Lang building, to the west, was incorporated into the project. Steam Plant Square now houses a popular restaurant, microbrewery, and numerous shops. Much of the internal piping and machinery was left in place, creating an unusual and interesting dining environment. The Central Steam Plant and Seehorn-Lang buildings are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as on local registers. Model revised 1-29-09
