Built as the First Congregational Church in 1884, it saw its last worshipper in 1968 and began its second life as the Smith Baker Senior Center, named for the Rev. Smith Baker, who served as the church's pastor from 1871 to 1890. He returned in 1907, when he was appointed pastor emeritus, a position he held until his death in 1917. The building -- "Lowell's cathedral," a city official called it -- served as the city's senior center until April 2003 and has since been vacant, playing host to some cultural events, its condition steadily deteriorating.
