Lowell High School was founded in 1832. Lowell high school was the first racially integrated public high school in the United States - beginning in 1843. In 1840 the first Kirk St. Building was built on the banks of the Merrimack Canal in downtown Lowell. The student population outgrew the original building ( it is still in use). This building was constructed in 1922 next to and connected to the original 1840 building. It was designed with same yellow bricks and window style to blend with first one. In the 1980s a third building was added across the canal. There are two overhead enclosed walkways that connect the students to all three buildings, running across the canal. There are over 4,000 students who attend Lowell High School. Both of my own children attended and graduated from Lowell High School.
