The Palmer Human Development and Family Studies Building is among the few academic facilities on the Iowa State University campus financed predominantly through private support with nearly 1750 donors participating. RDG Planning and Design constructed the 8.3 million dollar structure in 2000. The facility is noted for the unique way it brings together intergenerational studies and services related to families, child development, and financial counseling. The building is named for alumni James R. Palmer and Barbara R. Palmer who contributed the lead gift in the fund-raising effort launched in 1996. Behind Palmer is a small playground, which is part of the child development laboratory. This playground features a sculpture by Christian Peterson entitled Joy. The building received the Citation Award in 2001. This model was completed by Benjamin Schwartz.
