Built in 1931, George Washington Bridge spans 1067 meters long over Hudson River. The bridge was designed by master builders Othmar Ammann and Cass Gilbert. It was originally one decker, but capacity was built into it. With double suspension cables, each consisting of 26,474 individual wires, the bridge was designed to carry second deck with light rail transit. In the 1950's the traffic had grown so much, that the second deck was added and opened to traffic in 1962. It carries road traffic like the upper deck, and not light rail like originally planned. Currently the upper deck has eight lanes and lower deck six lanes. The whole suspended length of the deck is 1450 meters. The towers were originally designed to be covered with stone or terracotta curtain wall, like the Brooklyn bridge, but money was tight in the early 1930's recession time, and the towers were finally left bare. The main span was the world's longest when completed, nearly doubling the previous record. George Washington Bridge's record length was surpassed six years later by the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
