The Buckyball (or soccer ball) is based on the icosahedron • Three Golden Sections meeting at right angles is the key to drawing a perfect icosahedron • SketchUp inferencing helps by notifying you of the Golden Section rectangle as you use the rectangle tool • Connect the corners of the Golden Sections to create an icosahedron • The nice thing about this construction method is that you don't have to worry about angles, rotations, arcs, linear dimensions, or polygon vertices being on the same plane • Once completed, you can scale it to the size you need • In the final Buckyball, check the length of each edge -- you'll find that each is precisely the same • (Note that the Google-provided example is flawed; you'll find that edge lengths are non-uniform, and edges are variously comprised of mixed polygons, arcs or lines. If you need the accuracy, make your own with this method.)
