Located on the Champ de Mars next the Seine River in Paris, the Eiffel tower is one of the World’s great iconic structures. It was named after its engineer, Gustaffe Eiffel who had originally planned on it being constructed in Barcelona but, due to feelings at the Barcelona City Hall that it would clash with the overall architecture of the city, it ended up in its current location to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution. It took 300 workers 2 years to assemble the 7,300 tonne, tan-grey painted-iron structure from 1887 to 1889. It was the first structure to surpass the height of the Pyramids of Giza & held the title of the World’s tallest construction for 3 decades until New York’s Chrysler Building was completed in 1929. It has welcomed, so far, over 200 million visitors making it one the most popular attractions in the World.
