Eastern half of the Cockatoo Island plateau. Includes underground grain silos carved out of the solid rock by convicts in the early 1800's. The convict relics on the island are World Heritage listed. Also the dog-leg tunnel, carved out of rock right through the centre of the island during WWII for use as an air raid shelter. For the best Google Earth viewing experience select Tools/Options/General and turn off Building Highlights. Cockatoo Island is the biggest island in Sydney Harbour. In the past it was used as a prison, industrial school and shipyard. The first dry dock was built by convicts and completed in 1857. The shipyard ceased operation in 1992 and the island was added to the World Heritage List in July 2010. It is currently one of the sites used by the Biennale of Sydney, a contemporary visual arts event held every two years. Modelled by Peter Olsen, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, Australia.
