Named after nearby Marten Creek, the La Martre de Gaspé Lighthouse is considered by some to be the crown jewel of the Gaspé lighthouses. It was the only non-automated light in Quebec until 1972. Its Fresnel lens rotates during daylight hours in a mercury bath using the original system of weights and cables.
The first La Martre Lighthouse, a white, square wooden tower attached to a keeper's dwelling, was built in this tiny village overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1876. The current tower, which was completed in 1906, stands sixty-three feet tall about 130 Feet above the water. The wooden tower is supported inside by massive beams, and is painted bright red with a large vertical white stripe on its seaward side. This lighthouse exhibits a signature of four white flashes every thirty seconds which is visible 17 nautical miles.
The keeper’s house now serves as the town hall, and a small museum on the site has exhibits on lighthouse history and equipment.
