The chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael was the cemetery chapel of an Augustinian monastery founded in 1143 in Schönstatt. After the monastery was closed in 1567, the owners changed several times, and large parts of the monastery were destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, until Pallottines settled there in 1901. In 1914, Father Joseph Kentenich renovated the old building with some brothers and formed the covenant of love and thus founded the Schoenstatt Movement. The chapel became then the spiritual and symbolic heart of the movement and a place of pilgrimage.
