James Hoyle printed the first newspaper in Routt County, the Steamboat Pilot, on July 31, 1885 in a small one-room log cabin. He soon moved to a sawed log building on this site, where in 1905 Charles H. Leckenby, the paper's typesetter, became the owner. A fire in an adjacent livery stable burned both buildings to the ground in May 1909. This brick and stone building was built in the fall and housed the newspaper printing office for 90 years, while three generations of the Leckenby family ran the paper. Copies of the old Pilot newspapers can be viewed online at the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection ( http://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org/Default/welcome.asp?skin=Colorado&QS=Skin=Colorado&e ). The building is currently occupied by a cooperative of local artists.
