The South Central Regional Office Building is the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's first green office building. This leased facility, of 73,000 ft2 (6,800 m2), is a regional headquarters building located on a brownfield (former quarry and mine) in Harrisburg, PA. The facility was designed with the intention of being Pennsylvania's first "model" green technology building, one which would serve as an educational tool and as a beacon for others concerned with environmental sustainability, green building, and the application of high-performance materials and systems. The project's green team had four primary objectives: to utilize appropriate high-performance technology for significantly reducing energy consumption and operational costs; to maximize the use of sustainable materials throughout the project; to minimize negative impacts on interior air quality; and to improve health, motivation, and productivity of building users through the creation of an improved, highly flexible environment.
