Homewood House, the campus’s namesake, features the Homewood House Museum and is a National Historic Landmark. Built between 1801 and 1803, its Federal architecture serves as a blueprint for the rest of campus; even the most modern facilities at Johns Hopkins pay tribute to its design. Homewood House was constructed by Charles Carroll, Jr., the son of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and one of the richest men in America. The architect is unknown, but it is believed that the house was designed by the younger Carroll himself. During the University's centennial celebration in 1976, Homewood House was dedicated as a National Historic Landmark.
