The once vacant and almost ruinous Mint Coining Factory and associated buildings, located behind the Mint Offices on Macquarie Street has been transformed into a campus-like headquarters for the Historic Houses Trust. Contemporary architectural forms have been carefully inserted between the heritage fabric to accommodate a theatrette, exhibition areas, foyer and bar, while existing buildings have been adaptively reused to create a significant new resource centre for the public, the Caroline Simpson Library and Research Centre, and a new work environments for the 100 odd staff of the Trust. The new buildings and conservation, restoration and refurbishment works to the Coining Factory have been conceived to provide contemporary facilities that are complementary to the existing significant heritage buildings. The choice of materials and the building form have been designed to not only respond to the existing buildings on the site but to also speak of a further period of the continual development of this site. The refurbishment of the Coining Factory is intended to recover the lost spaces and forms of both the building interior and exterior and to provide greater public access to the entire complex, physically and visually. The intentions of the redevelopment of this extremely significant site is to provide a positive addition to the Mint site and the immediate environs of Macquarie Street and the institution of the Historic Houses Trust, as well as the greater City of Sydney.
