This model is an accurate representation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is dimensionally accurate, with the famous 3.99 deg lean, distortion of the upper floors and a representation of the 7 bells installed in the Bell Chamber. Constructed as a freestanding bell tower, it is the third oldest structure in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo after the Cathedral and the Baptistry. The tower's lean (originally to the southeast) developed soon after the start of construction in 1173, due to an inadequate foundation and loose sub-soil conditions. However, the project was interrupted several times by conflicts with Pisa's neighbouring City-States, resulting in a very long construction period of over 177 years. As successive floors were added, attempts were made to compensate for the lean, eventually causing it to change direction! As a result, the tower is slightly curved. This distortion is most noticeable with the upper floors and the bell chamber structure. Restoration efforts from 1990-2001 became necessary as the tower's lean had increased to over 5.5 degrees, raising concerns that it might topple. The tower has now been restored to its 1838 lean of just under 4 degrees, and is said to be stable for at least the next 200 years.
