The USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) is the lead hospital ship in its class. The Mercy's home port is the San Diego Bay where it is maintained to be on a five day ready notice for departure. Once called the SS Worth, in 1984 this converted oil tanker was renamed and changed into a hospital by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. Its mission is to provide rapid, flexible, and mobile acute medical and surgical services to support Marine Corps Air/Ground Task Forces deployed ashore, Army and Air Force units deployed ashore, and naval amphibious task forces and battle forces afloat.
