Geodesic Pillow Dome • 1981-2004 • Cape Cod, Massachusetts • Designed and built by James T. Baldwin, author of the book, "BuckyWorks" • This 31-foot diameter pillow dome served as a research environment for biological and greenhouse technology • The pillows were filled with argon gas, which has a lower heat conductivity than air • This provided enhanced insulation from cold winter temperatures in the northeast United States • The biological research conducted in the dome included fish-farming in tall, transparent cylinders • The official 1982 opening of the dome was attended by Richard Buckminster Fuller • Dome geometry is 3-frequency geodesic division of an icosahedron, approximating three-eights of a complete sphere • The frame was made from 6061-T6 aluminum schedule-40 water pipe • The heat-sealed pillows were made of Tefzel, a tough DuPont plastic film material related to Teflon • Note that, in this model, the inside surfaces of most of the pillows were excluded, to reduce model complexity
