Constructed in 1899 as headquarters for retailer Montgomery Ward, 6 North Michigan stands as one of Chicago's oldest skyscrapers. Originally the building was topped with a steep italianate pyramid and a sculpture brininging the structures height to 394 feet, making it the tallest building in Chicago from 1899 to 1922, surpassed by the Wrigley Building. In 1923 four extra stories were added to the main building while in 1947, due to structural reasons, the pyramid and spire were removed. In 2001 the building was converted into condominums, since then three stories have been added to the back of the main structure and the tower is currently being restored.
