The Wartburg is a medieval castle in Thuringia, Germany, near the city of Eisenach. It was built in 1067 on a small and rugged rock 220 m above Eisenach. The castle was sieged several times but never conquered. The Wartburg is a very important castle in german history: the clerical reformer Martin Luther lived here from 1521 to 1522 while he translated the New Testament of the Bible into German. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the Wartburg several times, on his initiative the castle was restorated the first time. The castle was a literary site, too, mostly known through the "Tannhäuser" by Richard Wagner. In the year of the German Revolution (1848), revolutionary students met at the castle for a political celebration, the famous Wartburgfest. Ludwig II. of Bavaria took the Wartburg as the archetype for his castle Neuschwanstein. Since 1999 the Wartburg is a World Heritage Site. Model ©2010 Johan Wagner http://www.rotorlabs.com
