Saints Peter and Paul Church in Gorodyanke is one of the three surviving pre-Mongolian architecture monuments in Smolensk, Russia. The temple was built in 1146 by prince Rostislav Mstislavich and was consecrated by the first bishop of Smolensk - Simeon. During the Polish intervention years (1611-1654) the church was converted into a Catholic one. Once the city was regained by the Russians, then a temple once again became Orthodox. In the XVIII century the temple complex was completely rebuilt; a second church was added west of the Sts. Peter and Paul church - dedicated to Sta. Varvara. In 1812 the temple was sacked by the French. In 1943 during the battle for the liberation of Smolensk, the temple was destroyed again. The church was finally reconstructed to its former shape in 1962-1963 under the supervision of architect P. D. Baranovsky.
