THE STORY: Almost two centuries before Columbus landed in America shores, a very old Czech royal dynasty of the Premyslids, based in Prague, controlled most of Eastern Europe, an area even larger than the Holy Roman Empire. However, without the support of Pope, Czech king loses Hungary, and following the assassination of Wenceslas III in 1306, the last male member of the royal family, the Czech kingdom lost Poland and even the king. After the failure in the east, comes a new strategy. In 1310, the Princess Elisabeth, the sister of Wenceslas, married John of Luxembourg, the son of Roman Emperor. This policy leads to success. Their oldest son-Charles IV-inherits not only the Czech Kingdom and Luxembourg, but also excellent relations with the French Royal Court, young Charles is educated in Paris. His tutor, Pierre de Rosieres later become Pope Clement VI, based in Avignon, France. Charles IV is favoured for the election of the German king and the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor in Rome. In April 1344, Pope Clement VI. exalts the Prague diocese in the Archdiocese. In November, begin construction of St Vitus Cathedral - spiritual centre of the Bohemian Kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire. First, guided by Frenchman Matthias of Arras, after his death, German Petr Parler. They built the eastern and western part was completed in 1929 as a symbol of Czech sovereignty after 400 years of domination of Austria.
