Melbourne Central is GPT's major retail and commercial flagship development. Its strong urban heart and porus edges cover more than a city block. It posits contemporary retail as the main social activity of the city, and the public realm as the new town square. In contrast to its original heterotopic configuration it is grafted into the city, and the city into it. This revitalisation is the real strength of Melbourne Central, as in its previous incarnationit was without public realm or urban presence and treated the city as a green-field site. The new public realm, on to which its fresh retail faces, comprises a monumental shot tower void overlooked by a cinema lobby, major street entrances, dense laneways, direct street retail access and station entries. The project's urban presence is a series of carefully curated individual architectural moves, designed to fall across the picture plane of the city.
