New College, designed by architect William Henry Playfair in 1846, is one of three colleges where candidates for the Church of Scotland may study theology. Consequently the building houses the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. The building contains one of the largest theological libraries in the United Kingdom as well as the General Assembly Room of the Church of Scotland.
