Stonehenge is the iconic Neolithic standing stone monument of England. Starting as a ditch and bank structure (possibly with a round wood building) about 2800 BC, the structure was finally finished around 1500 BC. Today the visitor can see about half of the original stone structure. There is an outside circle of standing stones, of which 17 of the original 30 are standing. Inside is a horseshoe shaped arrangement of larger stones, originally ten in five pairs, now three pairs and two singles. Both the circle and horseshoe were capped with stone lintels, some of which remain in place today. In modern times there have been many theories as to the purpose of the monument. These range from an astronomical observatory to a Druid temple. The most recent is that it was a place of healing. The mystery of Stonehenge may never be resolved.
