The 'Big Mac' spans over the Straits of Macinac connecting upper and lower peninsulas of the state of Michigan. The bridge was designed by David B. Steinman and built between 1954 and 1957. The main span is 1158 meters long and the total suspended length is 2626 meters. The overall length of the bridge including the approaches is over eight kilometers, 8038 meters to be precise. The bridge's deck carries four road lanes and a traffic load of approximately 11,600 vehicles a day. The deck has a clearance of 47 meters between the highest point and waterline during high tide. The two cables holding the road deck, are 62 centimeters thick and consist of 12,580 individual wires each.
