The Avery Smith coral house (aka. the Coral Rock house) was built in 1912/1913 as the second oldest structure in Miami Beach. It has always served as a residential building, until in 1990 it was turned into a fishingclub. In 2004, notorious developer Micheal Stern purchased the building, letting it deteriorate over the next 4 years. In 2007, Stern acquired permits to demolish the historic building by bribing officials with 110.000 USD, a car, and a Rolex watch. He also got permission to raze the Mediterranean Revival building and the Coral Rock garage around the back. Using a wire, the city authorities infiltrated the business, and prosecuted the bribed officials. Stern remained unharmed due to immunity in exchange for his cooperation. The preservation league filed a 4,1 million foreclosure against Stern and his partner Ivor Rose. The fate of the ruins remain uncertain.
