*Edited Description* When walking south on Collins avenue, this building immediately catches your eye, as it makes a beautiful ensemble with the Essex House across the street. The Essex's Streamlined design is a playful reaction to the Art Deco Fairwind by Lawrence Murray Dixon, 1936. Like the empire, there is a rectangular porch with vertical punctuation at the corners, where ground floor columns align with pilasters above. An elongated second story allows for a tall interior foyer and step-up. A lattice and vine motif decorates spandrel panels below the windows. Eyebrows turn the corners, but are halted as the side facade steps forward. The corners are squared off, not rounded. The front facade is divided into two identical wings, and one unusually narrow central bay. The central bay is splitted in half by a large vertical marquee, rising from a double eyebrow above the entrance. The design moves your gaze upward along the marquee, extending above the roofline, and topped by a peacock-like fan. Above the third story windows, the parapet steps back. The second story windows on the wings of the tripartite façade are flanked by small pilasters, while the third story windows are connected by contrasting panels, adding to the horizontality. The 10th street façade is relatively sober, with only minor decorations in forms of pinstriping, and varying colors. This hotel was built to be the Fairmont Hotel, but as copyright infringement laws were passed, the name changed to Fairwind
