The history of the Naumburg cathedral (ger. "Naumburger Dom") began in 1000 A.D. when Ekkehard I founded the "Nuwenburg" ("new castle") at this place. Later the town name "Naumburg" was derived from this. There existed several predecessor buildings: The castle, a collegiate church and an early romanic basilica are accounted for. Starting in 1210 the cathedral in its current form started to take shape. In 1330 the eastern part was built in early gothic style. The eastern towers stem from the 14th/15th century, their baroque canopies however just from 1711/1713. Same goes for the northwestern tower whose lowest of the three free floors dates to the ages when the early Gothic western gallery was built. The upper floors are newer (14th/15th century) and use a different column architecture in late gothic style. The southwestern tower was finished even later - in 1884.
The cathedral is also famouse for the passion reliefs in the western sanctuary and for the sculptures of the cathedral's benefactors, amongst them the well-known Ekkehard II. and Uta.
The complex of buildings includes in the east the Dreikönigskapelle (chapel of the three kings) with the kings visible as a relief on the eastern wall. In the southeastern corner the Marienpfarrkirche ("parish church of Maria") is located. It is now used as winter church.
