Leominster is a small market town in the Northern part of Herefordshire county in the West of England near the Welsh border. At the centre of town life is the Corn Square. The street market on Fridays preserves the square’s tradition. This is a complex and important building occupying a corner site. It was probably built between 1400 and 1450. On the east side, along School Lane, it had four medieval shops, each with a room above, that was reached from a balcony along the back of the range. To the right, the range facing Corn Square was re-fronted in the 17th century, when the two gables were added. The part of the building that now houses a laundrette was originally a small, medieval open hall with a central hearth, smoke rising from the open fire up through a vent in the roof. It is thought that the building was constructed by Leominster Priory, and that it may have housed a school room on the first floor, funded by income from the shops. (Special thanks to Mr. Duncan James, the real expert on the history of Leominster Buildings, for advice on building write-ups.)
