Considered to be America's first vernacular state capitol, the Nebraska State Capitol is located in central Lincoln, Nebraska and departs radically from the typical Classical designs of the majority of US State Capitols. Instead, it is composed of a central office tower with a small dome on top rising out of a large flat base with four courtyards. Designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue who won the nationwide competition for the design in 1920. The jurors of the competition were impressed with the radical design (called freely interpreted classical) and Goodhue's ability to gather a team of architect, sculptor, and landscapist. The sculptor Lee Lawrie was responsible for all the ornament on the building. He was heavily influenced by Lincoln native Hartley Burr Alexander in the inclusion of much Native American symbolism in the ornament. The overall symbolism of the building is described as a large flat base representing the prairie and the tower representing the hopes and aspirations of the pioneers. It is the state's third Capitol building in Lincoln after the first two had structural problems. Modeled by Mason Thrall.
