The Colodny’s Surprise Department Store building was constructed circa 1929. The store was originally opened in the Junction House in 1918 by Calman Colodny. Colodny was a Russian immigrant who came over in 1910. Many believe the actual Colodny building was constructed shortly after the Junction House burned down in 1925; however, it is unlikely that an Art Deco building (the only Art Deco architectural style building in all of White River Junction) would have appeared in Vermont until the late 1920s. It remained the Surprise Store and under the ownership of the Colodny family until 1991. In 1991, the building was sold to Vermont Housing Enterprises. Today, the Colodny building is the new home of the Center for Cartoon Studies, and has been since its founding in 2004.
