The original Mars colonization ship from Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars. The Ares carried the First Hundred colonists to Mars in 2026. The ship's rotating habitat section was eight toruses constructed of NASA space shuttle external fuel tanks, attached to a hub of Russian equivalents, with volatiles, propellant, aerobraking shield, and engine assembly in the rear. Up front was a stationary, zero-g bow-sprit like section which held the sensors, telescopes and long-range communications points, as well as a huge transparent "bubble dome" where colonists could view their journey. The First Hundred colonists settled at Underhill in 2027, and many of them played influential roles in Martian history over the next 200 years.
