The new extensions to the Art Gallery of New South Wales comprise several elements: a new Asian gallery, refurbishment to the existing Asian Gallery, a new restaurant and function space, relocation of the conservation department, a new temporary exhibition space, and extensions to existing cafe. The most visible element is the new Asian Gallery. The brief identified the opportunity to add to the symbolic expression of the building and reflect the collections. The historic collection is strongly expressed by the Walter Liberty Vernon Wing and the Australian and contemporary collections by the Andrew Anderson wings. The existing sandstone building stepping down the topography to the east provides the platform for the third, Asian Dimension to the Gallery’s collection and programmes. The translucent white glass lantern is counterpointed against the stone platform, reflects the sky and filters natural light. The spaces are planned to preserve views to the east and employ Asian techniques of borrowed and framed views, transitional spaces and sequential experience. The extensions are flexible, extremely cost effective, energy and environmentally sensitive, add to the heritage significance of the gallery and provide spaces that enable the gallery to expand its visitors, appropriately display its Asian collection and expand its dynamic public and exhibition programme.
