This neoclassical skyscraper rises 538 ft (164 m) above lower Manhattan. When it was constructed it was the largest building in the world in terms of floor area. Its massive bulk casts a seven acre shadow over the surrounding streets. It was this bulk that prompted the creation of the 1916 New York Zoning Regulation which required setbacks on skyscrapers as they rise. It was designed by architect Ernest R. Graham. Model created by Mason Thrall.
